“The crowd at The Local 269, a shabby New York City bar on 269 Houston Street, could not have been less interested. The bartender scribbled on his notebook, two older men talked to a woman half their age, and a gaggle of NYU students crowded a booth by the stage. Midterms were distant enough that they could drink on a Sunday. When an ear-splitting free jazz session finally died down, three NYU students put down their drinks took the stage.

“I thought Dilla was just a rapper,” asked a friend of mine who was there by mere coincidence. I began to reply, but the opening riff from “Workinonit” drowned out my voice. Maybe it’s a good thing more hip-hop kids weren’t in the house — one of them would have replied to that statement with the business end of a broken bottle.

The Detroit hip-hop producer passed away on February 10, 2006, but his influence is inescapable in 2010. The fanatical zeal of the Dilla fanbase has resulted in an outpouring of tributes, but few like this.
Stray Phrases is a jazz trio consisting of Storm Siegel on drums, Dave Mainella on piano, and Evan Crane on bass. On Sunday October 17, 2010, they covered J Dilla’s classic instrumental album Donuts from beginning to end. Metal Lungies is proud to bring you a recording of the whole set.”

Music I Like: Hugh Masekela "Keep Me Hanging On"

I scooped up Hugh Masekela's "Reconstruction" LP a few weeks ago up north, and there's a lot of quality joints on here. My favorite tracks are "I Can't Dance" and "Sala Le Mane." Couldn't find them on youtube, though. I did, however, find the leadoff track on this album, which is a fine cover of the Diana Ross & The Supremes Motown classic from 1966, which was written by the dynamic team of Holland-Dozier-Holland.

I love how Hugh puts his afro-beat flip on this soul track. Enjoy!

Last year Frank(e) and I were fortunate to work with an organization called NextAid and we did their FunkAid For Africa CD release party at Dakota Lounge last October (J.Boogie, Simple Citizens, Pleasuremaker, DJ Obah, Jeremy Sole, Glenn Red).

NextAid is an LA based nonprofit organization that harnesses the power of music to support sustainable development projects that serve vulnerable children, youth and women in Africa. Through music events and public education initiatives, NextAid provides empowering opportunities for concerned individuals to make a difference. Using the beats of our generation to provide hope for the next!

This year, I've linked up my Vibes & Stuff Radio crew as an official online partner to work on their 4th Annual World AIDS Day campaign which kicks off on November 27th and runs the entire month of December. There are over 14 parties in 10 cities in 3 countries on board!

Visit their website to find detailed info for events in: Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Cape Town, Detroit, Baltimore, Boston, Vancouver, Omaha, and San Diego. Proceeds support NextAid’s current projects in Africa including the construction an eco-friendly micro-enterprise facility for youth, the education of orphaned children, and critical maternal health programs for girls and women.

If you cannot make it to a benefit party, you can still be a part of the global campaign by joining them online. NextAid artists, such as DJ Dan and DJ Colette will be raising awareness and funds for projects through a Twitter generated $10 tweet campaign. Supporters can make direct donations to NextAid, send holiday eCards gift donations to friends and family, shop for great music gifts from OM Records at the Holiday Pop Up Store (launching soon) where 10% of sales will go to NextAid, and make other purchases from over 1200 retailers at NextAid’s We-Care.com shopping mall.

Changemakers are also invited to take action with NextAid’s “10 Ways to Do Good” list that makes it easy to be a part of the movement. Anyone anywhere can donate, email, make a tweet or a beat, and be part of this global campaign!

Music I Like: Quadron "Baby Be Mine"

This one is tuggin at the heart strings a bit these days. I'm a big fan of Quadron, so to hear Coco bring her rendition of the Michael Jackson classic is just what I need. To be perfectly honest, the verses of the MJ version are absolutely amazing, but I never enjoyed the actual hook. Something about it just seemed out of place from the melody that the verses set in place. So to hear Quadron stray from the original melody there really won me over!

AUDIBLE WEDNESDAY was an event located in historic Dowtown Pomona, at Characters. This was created by DJ's Concise, Erok, MichlleQ, JustPudge, and myself as an outlet for musical exploration. DJ Concise said at an event while being requested by a patron for a top 40 song, "Sorry but we don't play that here, Audible Wednesday is more of a bottom 50 event."

Audible Wednesday had a short but exciting tenure. Listen in to the podcasts and you can hear the friendships made and the rug being cut.

Mayer Hawthorne explains the story behind this record:
“I met Nottz at Nightlife's Dilla Tribute in L.A. and we just kept in contact. I had always been a fan of Nottz since the 90s. He sent me a bunch of beats and at first I had no idea what to do with any of them, but eventually it hit me. I sang a hook for him on his album as well.
The song is a cover of a cat named Otis Leavill which is one of my all time fav soul sides, but relatively unknown 45. I don't think Nottz even knew it. I actually even made up some of the words because no one could make out what he said in the original. ha!

When Nottz sent me that batch - that particular beat stood out. It had the same chord progression as the Otis Leville, so I just went with it.”

Over my time dropping in on the likes of Trombone Shorty, Big Sam & The Rebirth Brass Band when they play in LA, there's usually one constant....the DJ dropping the ill funk/soul gems in between band sets....

...that would be DJ Quickie Mart.

If you are a unfamiliar, he is the real deal from NOLA, playing gigs, travelling and touring with some of the best of the best of New Orleans bands & musicians such as Galactic, Dr. John, Kevin O'Day, Rebirth Brass Band, Trombone Shorty and more.

Displaced after Katrina and eventually ending up on our coast, he's a DJ/producer that definite has great taste and deep music crates.

His latest mix, "Ask Ya Mom An ‘Nem…" is an all vinyl set of classic New Orleans funk and soul all from Louisiana based artists (except for Gil Scott-Heron’s track “Angola, Louisiana”) that is deep, funky and delicious.

As a father myself, this song resonates deep within me. Bambu captures the essence of what it is to be a father to a boy growing up in the same streets he grew up in. It's a point of view that can be seen for someone without children, but only truly felt for those of us with children. Big ups to Bambu, Kid Heroes, Xylophone, and PG Films. Greatest Athletes: Jackie Robinson

It's hard for me to put into words what Jackie Robinson means to me...

Beyond being a Dodger fan, growing up in the same neighborhood, playing the same sport, and attending the same high school as this amazing man, made me feel a bit more connected to him than probably your average youngster.

Growing up in Pasadena, you heard the stories about Jackie (particularly from my old Canadian born neighbors who went to school with the Robinsons...most notably Mack Robinson, Jackie's older brother who finished second to Jessie Owens in the '36 Olympics under the Nazi evil eye), read books about him and played in the parks named after him.

As a young boy playing baseball, I tried to pattern my game after his, by being a whiz on the basepaths and as always hikng up my pants in the old school style. Even as I struggle to continue to play today with my thrice surgically repaired knees, there is rarely a moment that goes by on the field I don't think how lucky I am to be able to play this game...and I have him to thank for that.

He was so much more than a baseball player...a soldier, an activist, a family man, a role model and more...This is a man that integrated baseball years before the rest of the country's institutions integrated anything. His integration into baseball preceeds the civil rights movement by at least 8 years (if you count 1955 and the Rosa Parks incident as the start of the movement as most Historians will agree on).

I don't know if I have the proper words to pay him his due respect for being the pioneer to integrate Major Leauge Baseball 63 years ago today, April 15th.

My personal tribute will hopefully be going to the game tomorrow to pay my respects for the man that allowed me as a young boy to have realisitic dreams of playing in the majors, just like him in Dodger blue.

"The Faubourg Tremé or as it is more frequently referred to, Tremé, is not only America's oldest black neighborhood but was the site of significant economic, cultural, political, social and legal events that have literally shaped the course of events in Black America for the past two centuries...."

During slavery, Faubourg Tremé was home to the largest community of free black people in the Deep South and a century before the Harlem Renaissance and the modern Civil Rights Movement, Tremé was a center of black cultural and political ferment. Throughout the Reconstruction period (1865-1877), black New Orleanians integrated the streetcars through sit-down strikes; it became the only city in the South with desegregated schools. At one point, more than half the state legislators were African Americans as well as the governor.

In an era when America was still immersed in slavery, the ability for Blacks to acquire, purchase and own real property during this time was remarkable; only in New Orleans did this occur with any regularity and consistency. Here in the Tremé, black and white, free and enslaved, rich and poor co-habitated, collaborated, and clashed to create much of what defines New Orleans culture up to the present day. (read more)

Tremé is also home to Congo Square. During the time of the French rule of the area,"a code noir" regulated the treatment of slaves and allowed them the right to assemble on Sundays for worship and market. During Spanish rule, all slaves were permitted to request contracts to buy their freedom...and--most critical for the development of its culture--to continue to socialize en masse each weekend. Once an open space where a native American tribe held ceremonies, the place where New Orleans's slaves came to meet, was a grassy square at the edge of the old city, which came to be known as Place Congo, later Congo Square

Congo Square became the only place in America where African slaves were allowed to perform their own music and dance from the mid-1700s through the 1800's, eventually giving birth to a place where brass & symphonic bands gave concerts & providing the foundation for a more improvisational style. This style played throught the city, flourished & became famous in Storyville and would come to be known as Jazz; thus establishing the roots of American music...the gatherings that took place at Congo Square constitute a singular and fundamental phenomenon in the musical and cultural history of the United States.

All of that fact leads up to a fictional account of the neighborhood you can now watch in your homes on a weekly basis. David Simon, creator of The Wire, brings you his new show "Tremé", which premieres this Sunday April 11th on HBO. Set just 3 months after Katrina, it plans to chronicle the residents & provide insights into this unique New Orleans neighborhood, including musicians, chefs, Mardi Gras Indians, and other ordinary New Orleanians as they try to rebuild their lives, their homes and their unique culture in the aftermath of the 2005 hurricane.

My boy Frank(e) is a true inspiration on the decks. Not only is his style clean, acrobatic, technical, and musical, but his knowledge and passion for music itself seems as bottomless as an abyss. Have one conversation with Frank(e) and you'll also know that he's one of the most down to earth cats you'll come across. Just the same, watching Frank(e) get to work on the 1's and 2's just once, you'll see one of the illest doing what he does best, conversing with turntable technique. I hate going to spots and cats just standing watching the DJ, but some DJ's hypnotize, and Frank(e) definitely is one of those DJ's. Anytime you get a chance to catch Frank(e), I highly suggest you do. Peep the vid, and catch some inspiration for yourself.

In the early 90s my older sister Cynthia used to run the LA streets like it was nobody's business....she was definitley the lady in the know. Although I was underage at the time, she would drag me out to various parties her friends would do when she could get me in, most notably a party called Brass. It was my introduction to a whole new world of music and ignited my passion for rare grooves and funky soul....it was also my introduction to her good friend & super dope DJ, then a very young DJ Daz.

Although my time experiencing these parties was brief as I moved to Hawaii for the rest of the decade, it had a profound effect on how I felt about music and parties ever since.

Brass truly laid down a foundation that helped pave the way for many notable parties and promotions in LA since...including The Rhythm Section. I'll let Daz tell you about Brass in his own words

"Okay, where to start? Well in 1992 there was a little Acid Jazz club that formed at a Greek restaurant on Melrose Ave in Los Angeles, CA. through friends of friends and at a point when the musical influences in hop hop, jazz, and reggae were probably at its peak as far as creativity goes in the music industry. And if you were part of the industry, then this is where you had to be…. BRASS. Brass was the name of the club and for anyone who was there?, well then this mix is dedicated to you! 75 mins (song for song) of every chune that was played regularly at the weekly Sunday sessions and one off parties thrown by the Brass crew including the first ever promoted shows in L.A. of The Brand New Heavies, Jamiroquai, Guru’s Jazzmatazz, The Roots, Born Jamericans, The Pharcyde, MC Solaar, along with some Roy Ayers shows for the good vibes...

Food for the Soul

Man oh man what a beautiful language music is. Almost have to wonder what life would be without it. Music can make you lose track of time positively or just get you into a mood where everything else around you is just irrelevant. It is an injection of food for the soul and a guaranteed tool to get your body movin and mind stimulated. I have included 10 songs today. Each one dabbling in a bit of funk, latin, dub, and nu-jazz. Music is all about diversity so don't get stuck listening to one genre. There is just an infinte amount of rich rhythms out there for everyone and it would be a tragedy if you didn't allow yourself to explore all the goodness out there. I hope you have enjoyed all the music I have shared with you so far and I will continue to share my crates with all of you as time goes on.

Remembering Malcolm...

Malcolm X (May 19, 1925 – February 21, 1965) was assassinated 45 years ago today.

Malcolm X was a cultural icon & one of the greatest and most influential African Americans in history. From his beginnings as street hustler & inmate, through his time with the Nation of Islam and to his eventual evolution to global humanist, one thing remained constant....his presence. He was highly captivating & charismatic, an incredible orator, & completely mesmerizing....when he spoke, you listened.

Considering that shortly before his death, a number of events during his world travels, led him to shift his focus from civil rights to fighting for global human rights, it's tragic that his life was cut so short. The New York Post wrote that "even his sharpest critics recognized his brilliance—often wild, unpredictable and eccentric, but nevertheless possessing promise that must now remain unrealized." At the time of his assasination, he was only 39.

So many things can be said about this human rights advocate & activist...but I'll let Ossie Davis' Eulogy speak & Malcolm tell you in his own words..

Last May, The Rhythm Section partnered up with a wonderful company, Anti-Body (anti-poverty, beautiful body), a fair trade body-care company, to do the exclusive Pre-Launch Party for the "Fair Trade The White House" campaign...

This year, we want to help the campaign for it's next next phase, "Fair Trade My Home".

Fair trade is an alternative way of doing trade, where the people producing a product are treated fairly, paid fairly, and are being fair to the environment. A home that is committed to the purchase and use of fair trade goods is a “Fair Trade Home.”

Thus we're on a quest to help them build awarness of this movement by encouraging the creation & delcaration of thousands of “Fair Trade Homes" leading up to this years World Fair Trade Day in 2010.

The goal is to create as many self-declared Fair Trade Home’s as possible by having people submit a photo or video showing which fair trade goods they regularly purchase and use in their home. Submissions are being gathered at www.fairtrademyhome.com.

The purpose of "Fair Trade My Home" is to raise greater awareness of fair trade to the American consumer, so that each person will choose to integrate more fair trade purchases into his or her regular buying habits, and cut down on poverty both in America and around the world.

Every Sunday at The Little Temple I spin at an event called SONIDO SUNDAYS. I usually drop the opening set from 9:30-11:00pm, playing mostly roots reggae. While I've been a fan of reggae music for quite a while, I can't say I have the most extensive library of records from the genre. I do put in a solid amount of research in on the weekly, and usually when I'm at home working I spend time going through my reggae records and figuring out what I want to spin on Sunday.

Here's something I found in the crates this week...Bought this reggae compilation years ago and never really spent time going through it. It's such a good feeling discovering more music I can spin for others at spots! First track I put the needle on was this one...Enjoy.

Once when I was a doing my radio show on KTUH at the University of Hawaii in the mid-90's, my sister (who happened to be in town) was hanging out and digging through our immense record libary (the largest record collection in the state).

After digging around for like an hour, she came barging in to the control room with this record and pretty much made me put it on immediately....what can I say, she's got good taste!

Not only is this a great song and a foundation for a Hip Hop classic, but it is EASILY one of my favorite dirty lyrics of ALL time....they don't sing with these kinda dirty metaphors anymore....Love it:

-Heard everywhere in the last two weeks....

If you've been watching any Super Bowl coverage, it's been hard to escape this ubiquitous chant coming from Saints fans, supporters and from New Orleanians in general...

"Who Dat?"

This was the first time this local chant has received national exposure at this level and thus many were hearing it for the first time....apparently this included the head honchos at the NFL league offices as well.

After orginially claiming trademark infringement to "Who Dat?" they unknowingly caused a firestorm of protest amongst the local fan base. Unbeknownst to the NFL, the chant had been associated with the team ever since Aaron Neville recorded this song & which the team subsequently adopeted shortly thereafter:

Fortunately the folks in New Orleans are VERY protective of their unique culture and were not having it, getting the NFL to bow to public pressure & protest and conceding any trademark claims.

I am a die hard Dallas Cowboys fan...However, this city, still dealing with the Katrina aftermath nearly 4 1/2 years later, has a connection to its team like no other. A Super Bowl victory would not only be priceless, but in a city World Famous for their parties and parades, a win might just cause the biggest celebration the city has EVER seen: "Super Bowl parade in New Orleans? It would make Mardi Gras look like two boys pulling a beagle in a wagon"

Thus, in honor of the city that is very near and dear to my heart, I'm sharing a recent podcast inspired by my many trips to New Orleans for The Jazz Fest.

I knew a visual accompaniment to this record would eventually come out. ECHO PARTY is possibly the best mix to come out in 2009 and, even more quite possibly, the last 5 years (at least).

"After Edan labored for a year to complete his new project Echo Party he was very happy with the outcome but wanted it to have a visual accompaniment to help compliment his live DJ set. He approached Tom Fitzgerald who also happens to be Cut Chemists go to video guy and film archivist who works for the The Silent Theatre in LA. What has been created in nothing short of a perfect visual marriage for the unmistakably unique album. There will be a full length version for the whole album with a party at The Silent Theatre in LA to debut the full length video in early 2010 (and yes Mr. Edan will be DJing). I thought after so many sessions that I would be absolutely sick of this mix and all the transitions and what not (we must've listened to small little segments and segues 25 times each AT LEAST), but yet, two weeks after it's release, it hasn't left my car CD player. Lots of quality joints in here, put together with some serious love for vinyl. These are two cats who are long overdue for a Grammy (both are nominated for Best Rap Album). Not that any artist needs a Grammy to have "made it," but it would just be nice to see one of these two on stage giving a heartfelt speech about their love of this music.

Side note: Common is also nominated in this category, but I just don't see his Universal Mind Control record outshining The Ecstatic or The Renaissance.

Mos Def's "Casa Bey," off The Ecstatic album, was also nominated for Best Rap Solo Performance alongside Drake, Eminem, Jay-Z, and Kid Cudi. I think this video is absolutely amazing. Some of the best hip hop of 2009 really

She moved to Brooklyn, NY in '98 where she began collecting her own records and fell in love with the art of deejaying, as well as learning the music industry game working at Rawkus Records and Blacksmith Management. She began spinning out when she moved back to Los Angeles in 2004 and rocked parties like the infamous Root Down and Soul Sessions. Now residing in SF, she has since played alongside cutting edge artists such as Daz-i-Kue, 45 King, Talib Kweli, Exile, DJ Spinna and more. You can find her spinning soul, hip hop, funk, disco, boogie, house, and more at Le Cirque Thursdays @ Yoshi's Jazz Club-SF and Sweater Funk Sundays @ Li Po Lounge.

Roza and Shred One first connected in 2008 both headlining at 111 Minna Gallery in San Francisco. They instantly vibed and complemented each other’s style on the decks, igniting the spark for future collaboration. Although residing in different cities, they set out to work together through a tireless series of recording sessions from SF to LA where “LOVESPACE” was eventually born, a mix showcasing their vinyl collector and turntablist influences through a rhythmic journey of love songs in the musical eras of 80’s boogie, disco-funk, and house.

Look out for their future projects and collaborations as they finish 2009 off with a mini-Cali tour playing at venues in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego with DJ Raichous (table manners/LA).

Peace4Kids.org provides programs and services for foster and at-risk youth from ages 5-18, and after emancipation until age 24. Peace4Kids is truly on the front lines in addressing the needs of foster and at-risk youth in the South Los Angeles neighborhoods of Watts, Willowbrook and Compton. Born in Boston, then moving to Chicago, this dude has always wanted to put his spin on hiphop...whether its diggin, rhyming, choppin beats or cuttin it up party djing....he was always gettin bizzy...in the late 90s he moved to Florida...when he arrived,P. Locke "aquired" a pr. of turntables...and...armed with his record collection and rhyme booksbegan to go out and see what the city had to offer...he quickly became established as one of the illest hiphop cats to ever live in the city of jax, fl...he was known as "Therapy"... the Tripe Threat"...a true legend,that statement stands to this day....as he is till sought after by venues for his dj skills.

Being the illest local dj and illest local mc/producer wasnt enuff,so he decided it was time to take hisget bizzy ethics to the WORLD....so, along with 3 close friends, he formed a group called "Asamov"...tin 05 they put out an internationally critically acclaimed record called "And Now..."this dude produced, rhymed, and did scratches all over the record including theirmost popular single "BoomBox"...then, while Asamov became known enough to be sued over the use of the name Asamov(which is why they are now known as the ABs...)this cat decided to keep it movin by starting another group with 2 other close friends..."the Smile Rays"....they released two Albums..."Party...Place" and "Smilin On You"Both of which, he conceptualized, co produced and was the vocal frontman...this whole time, he had made many contacts in the rap worldand was producing for many cats including Mr.Lif and Akrobatikwhom he also traveled the world with as tour dj.

While on tour in 08,a label in LA (TRES) said to him"YO , your doing all these groups, ...rhyming,djing, producing..and your ill on stage...why dont you do a solo album where you can flex all that solo?"so...Therapy thought about it...and he said "Wordup, but im gonna use my real name".....without further ado here he is....his name is Paten Locke...

If you're a DJ, or have been in this soulful music scene for awhile, then RAW FUSION/GAMM is nothing new to you. If you've ever been to a club/party anywhere around the world that is playing that sweet soulful dance music, then you have probably heard alot of their catalog without even knowing it. But if you are not sure, you better pay attention and get your read on, then get your dig on, and then get your listen on because this is definitely one of my favorite labels.

Raw Fusion Recordings - a loud minority!

With over 50 records released, Raw Fusion Recordings founder and CEO, "Mad" Mats Karlsson continues to rule the Swedish underground club music scene. Artists such as Freddie Cruger aka Red Astaire (SWE) Spiritual South (UK), Simbad (UK/FR), Future Beat Investigators (FI) and Povo (DK), keep granting the label life as Raw Fusion releases some of the greatest tunes to come out the studios of these artists.

The brainchild of Raw Fusion, Mad Mats, started his path into the future by the way of DJ'ing after leaving his successful days of break dancing behind (Swedish champ 1985!). Over years Mats became one of the most well known DJ's to come out of Sweden, touring the world with his diverse musical selection. After many years of continuously discovering new sounds and connecting with fresh inspirations, Raw Fusion was born as the start of a new era.

The Raw Fusion trademark started out as a monthly club night founded by Mats in boogie down Stockholm back in 1996. The premier night was an instant hit and the Raw Fusion Club still to this day attracts a large dedicated audience and has reached cult status within the Stockholm club scene. Since 2002 the musical vision of Mats has grown into a prosperous recording label, dedicated to spreading the future of black dance music across the globe. And in 2003 Mad Mats created a sub label to Raw Fusion Recordings. It was called Jugglin' Records (named after the Ragga Twins underground hit tune with the same name!) and was intended to have a much more urban sound than the mother label had had so far. After only 10 releases, the label was taken out of commission and was rejoined with Raw Fusion Recordings, which now is limitless to genre and musical styles.

The musical roots of Raw Fusion Recordings rest on a steady foundation based on black music of the underground club scene. Genres like soulful house, cutting edge hip-hop, electronic funk, raw street-soul, dance floor jazz, rough latin and deep Detroit techno boogie are represented. Since day one the catalogue has consisted of various artists who all represent a raw, innovative, urban, street feel, which signifies the music that we love, live and breathe.

Heroic?

I came home yesterday and my wife tells me how she, and our 18 month son, Brandon, went to Best Buy earlier in the day, and right when they got there, Brandon saw the DJ Hero display and beelined straight for it. Stopping short of running into the display, arms bent 90 degrees, hands balled up into fists, he proceeded to bounce to the beat. She said that while they were shopping around the store, at any given moment, Brandon would break, full speed to the DJ Hero and get up on the turntable controller. That's my boy!! It isn't his first time around a turntable. When dad is practicing at home, Brandon is quick to get up on the decks (having me pick him up), so he can explore the platters, cross faders, buttons, knobs, or any switch his little hands can reach. The force is strong in this one.

So when I got a call from DJ CONCISE, inviting me over to see the new pad, explore some music, and check out his newly acquired DJ Hero, I was all about it. I mean if the Prime Minister of Cool,(Brandon), was so heavily drawn, I had to check it out. He also told me that Analog and A1 was going to be there, so I jumped at the opportunity to hang out with my friends, and get some input of the game from DJ's with different styles.

As soon as I got there, Analog was at the controller, A1 was on his laptop, Concise was on his laptop, and Concise's brother was on the computer in the other room upping his music files. But the first thing I noticed was the sound coming from the 5 speakers connected to the 52" tv mounted on the wall. On a 1200, Analog is a master chef. Cutting, scratching, juggling, these are all things that come second nature to him. So seeing him playing the game, and playing it well, was no surprise at all. Concise, a well seasoned dj, who's style of dj'ing is completely different than Analog's got on the controller next. As he was playing he went over the basics with me about what certain things on the screen mean in terms of game play. After he finished a set, I got up on the controller, and for the first try, I must say...I SUCKED!!! As each song in the set went by, familiarity to the controller started to set in, and less and less mistakes were being made. What's this I'm starting to feel...is that my good ol' buddy FUN????

My main objective was to see how handling a real turntable and mixer was translated in the game. Here's what I found out. At the level I was playing at, MEDIUM, it doesn't. If anyone thinks that they can take the skills that they've acquired from this game, and apply them to two turntables and a mixer, they're going to be very disappointed. When I asked Analog and A1 how they felt about the translation, Analog said "The buttons on the platter, that doesn't matter to me." The way that the cross fader interacts with the actual scratch, non existent. A1 said, "If this game is any indication of my dj skills, I shouldn't be dj'ing"(probably because the game isn't advanced enough to understand A1's flares). The part that makes full sense though is the cross fader going full left of full right. For anyone to try to compare it to "real dj'ing"(whatever your definition of that is), is absurd until you get into the upper levels of the game. The makers of this game had to find ways to incorporate a game format into a turntable/mixer controller.

According to Concise, only when you get to the higher levels such as HARD and EXPERT, you see more of a correlation of directional scratching and patterns. There is more doubling up, and the pace moves much faster, so the HAND/EYE, or should I say EAR/EYE coordination is more apparent and "realistic". And even then, it's limited at best. But here lies the problem, where is the creative freedom? The true nature of a DJ is to be able to tweak, filter, scratch, and manipulate in order to express his own creativity. With DJ Hero, we must follow the patterns given. If there were a FREEPLAY mode where it would actually express what you were doing, I think we'd have a different beast on our hands.

Analog, the technician, put it best by saying "It's a game", and with that I agree 100%. Once I stopped comparing it with the true technical ability and freedom one needs to rock sets like these, as a game, DJ Hero is a success. HIGHLY ENTERTAINING, FUN, ADDICTIVE even. Conscise told me "I'm addicted to this game. I'm losing sleep because of it." And I can see why. The Mashups in it are well worked.(And believe me, this is NOT Concise's preferred genre) The skills taken to put the music alone together from a DJ standpoint is phenomenal. You can definitely hear the signature sounds of Z-Trip, Shadow, and Jazzy Jeff to name a few. At one point, A1 found a site where Z-Trip was selling the records of the songs for the game. For anyone out there that is dreaming to be THE DJ, this game is for you. Complete with big clubs and large crowds.

I will admit that even before playing it, I was judgemental of it, but after playing it, I will not turn down the opportunity to play again! I suggest you do the same and check it out for yourself. Concise's address is hAHHAAHA jk!

Final thoughts:

"Moral: we can kill it on real time dj'ing, but we still suck at DJ Hero. But it's still fun. hahaha"-Concise

My Take: Fun Fun game. It will definitely be a great party game. And if you want to be comptetive in that arena, it will behoove you to have it. If you don't have turntables and a mixer at home, this is a great substitute for fulfilling that inner dj that yearns to be heard. Who knows what kind of ideas or energies it will spark?

On a personal note....I'll get it for Brandon if he wants it, but I won't buy it for myself. If I have time to play, I have time to practice, and I'd rather get on my tables every time.

Aissa Logerot is more than just a designer. He takes form and function and morphs them into a hybridal (I think I just made up a word) masterpiece. His ideas range from fun to functional. Not all creations are revolutionary, but definitely come from a different angle, as is the case with HALO, the LED Spray "paint" can, and Lampad'air which uses air to blow up a bladder which is directly proportionate to how much light is produced.

Aissa has also been named 2009's RED DOT award winner, for his work "Extensions". This work will be exhibited for one year at the museum of Singapore.

DJ Concise, who is credited in starting one of LA's parties known as the Rhythm Section, has been studying all aspects of the music culture to bring an eclectic appeal through the medium of sound.
